Activity 7: The Rainman of Rajasthan

For the 7th summer learning journey teaser week activity we had made a DLO about the water project. this activity was fun to do because it was interesting to find out what its like in countries that don't have the access to the clean water that other people have. We worked collaboratively with our partner or our group. This activity was similar to what we did earlier in the year aout Turkana we made water filters after we learnt about Turkana.

Activity 6: The Greatest of All Time

Market Day Evaluation

Last week on friday PBS had a Market Day to help us on our inquiry topic enterprise and economics. Our product was the Rainbow Crayons. Were Rainbow Crayons a good choice? They were good because we had a variety of different colours and shapes. They were cheap to make and looked really good in the end. Our gross profit was $96.00, our costs were $8.00 which made our net profit $88.00. We made our product with broken and used crayons and moulds that were gifted to us. So they were cheap to make and on the market day we sold our Rainbow Crayons for only one dollar. While we were doing our market day we could buy an ice block for one token because we used tokens to buy products from other classes not money.

Romeo and Juliet

This week for reading we were watching a small clip about the story of Romeo and Juliet. After we watched the clip we got into groups of four or five. Once we got into groups we made sentences then we had to turn those sentences into ten syllable sentences. This was easy to do but it wasn't finished we still had to create a animation or something to explain the scene that we were making our DLO. The people that were in my group were Matthew, Aung Naing and Joseph. This animation was hard because there were only two people who finished it. The two other people were at an interschool.

Thanksgiving

Photo by Jxson CC BY 2.0

The Mayflower sailed out of Plymouth Harbour in England on September 6, 1620. The small sailing ship carried 102 pilgrims across the Atlantic ocean for 65 days to plimouth in the New World . They had religious freedom now but life was hard, as they had to build or  make everything they needed for survival from scratch. The winter made life hard and many people lost their lives, crops failed to grow and spirits were low. Some of the wampanoag tribe helped by giving advice and by bringing food. That next year the pilgrims harvest was much better. To celebrate they hunted for meat and turned many of their crops into delicious food,  and invited the wampanoag tribe to join them in a feast of thanksgiving.

Shoe challenge

Another day of going to school with Max. I feel so sore being worn everyday. When I was first out of the box I was excited but now I’ve ended up being old and broken. The toilet smells, I get gum on my soul and dirt all over me. I can’t take it anymore!! Finally the bell rings and I'm heading home. I see freedom as we proceeded to go home a big fluffy thing comes up to us and licks me. Phew! As soon as I get home after a stressful day, my arms are untied and I smell like meat. I always think to myself I really want him to get a new pair of shoes.

This week we did a writing challenge to remind us what personification is and how we use it. We had to get into pairs I was with Jayden and we wrote a short amount of sentences about dirty and old shoes. There was a twist it was that we couldn't talk to each other. This was real challenging to do because you might be thinking of an idea and your partner just writes a sentence that has nothing to do with what you were thinking.

Reading Presentation

This week we were in partners and presented a DLO about the history topic. My partner was Jayden and we were made a DLO and a Kahoot about our topic the Stone age. First we had to write the important words down in our writing book, then we made a interactive activity on kahoot. Jayden and I made ten questions for LS2 to answer. Once we made our Kahoot we made a DLO for our introduction, and we presented it.

Tuesday 19 November 2019

Transformation

Today LS2 were learning about 4 different types of transformation. We Made DLO's to show the four different types of transformation. An example of transformation reflection or symmetry it's were you put a mirror on an object and it looks the exact same on the mirror. We did this task to understand transformation.

FOODPRINT

Yesterday LS2 was invited by LS1 to be presented with a Lady named Michael who was showing us about food waste and her small business called FOODPRINT. Michael has been working on this Business for two years but it has been going for six months. Her app is like Uber eats but instead of the food being delivered to you, you have to pick it up. The logo design was based on a beetroot but some people thought it was different fruits or vegetables.  FOODPRINT is an app to provide food at lower prices instead of wasting oversupply when Demand has decreased.

Manaiakalani film festival

Yesterday PBS went to sylvia park cinemas to watch films from 3 different schools. We were looking after little student from Room 6 & 7. We sat with our partner on the bus and we walked them to the movie theater and into their seats. This year was the 12th Manaiakalani Film Festival. This year was the first time that the  We went to the back of the theater to sit on the comfy seats. The Manaiakalani Film festival was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed watching the movies from our school and other schools.

Guy Fawkes

This week for inquiry we started to learn about Guido Fawkes and the things that he did, like how he tried to kill James the first on the 5 November 1605. The plot failed and got executed and died in 1606. That's why every 5th of november we blow up fireworks to remember what Guido Fawkes did.

Financial Literacy (Maths)

L.I To understand profit equals income minus expenditure.
This week for our maths lesson we played a financial literacy game to help us learn about discounts, overdrafts in bank accounts. This game was fun but some of the questions we had to solve were kind of challenging. The purpose of this game was about profit. Even though I had a big loss I had fun in the end. The amount of money I had lost was - $65.20. We did this challenge with a partner my partner was Jayden.

Firework Saftey

This week we created a slideshow to show the importance when celebrating Guy Fawkes night. We presented to Room three, they were really good they were listening to what we had to say. It is important to know what can keep you safe and what is dangerous.

Friday 1 November 2019

The real cost of owning a dog

This week for Maths we were in groups or pairs and we made a copy of a Goggle Sheet to help us find the cost of a dog but we had to find a dog using a site were you answer questions and it will give dog that matches the questions you answered. We to find out how much money we would have to spend on our dog in it's whole lifetime. Th most expensive thing was the food which would come to for each year $672.26. This math activity was fun to complete.

Tech

This week for tech we had another session of coding with Mr Krishna. Today we were attempting to make our M-Bots to move around in a circle and a figure of eight, but first we talked about what we did last week and Mr Krishna was giving us clues to help us finish the task. The easiest one to complete was the circle we just had to make the power on one side more powerful than the other. The most challenging one to complete was the figure of eight. Once we finished that we were making the first letter of our names. These were challenging but fun to complete.

Thursday 17 October 2019

Maori

This week LS2 had their first Maori Session with Whaea Odie. This week we had to complete the Simpsons family tree. At the bottom of the family tree there were some Questions in Maori like Ko wai te whaea o Homer who is the mum of Homer, Ko wai te papa o Lisa who is the father of Lisa and Ko wai te whaea o Ling who is the mother of ling. This Challenge was fun to complete.

Wasp Life Cycle

This week for reading my group and I were reading a article in our school journal book called the Stripped invaders. This book I about the Life cycle of a wasp. After we read the book we decided to make a animation but that was to hard so we just made a DLO. This activity was fun to complete and the book was interesting.

Why I would make a good School leader

Explanation

Early Maori Enterprise

Maori Enterprise started in N.Z. Europeans came to N.Z to trade. They ripped off the Maori and stole their land. Maori over the Europeans. Maori claimed their land and lived peacefully.

This week for our inquiry we were in groups of four and we made our notes then made them into five sentences and, finally we made those five sentences into sentences with 10 syllables

Water filter (STEAM)

This week was the last week for our inquiry topic STEAM. We have been working on making water filters, but before we made them we had to make a plan on what we were going to make. Our plan was to put a cloth on where the beverage comes out and used tape to hold it together. Then on Wednesday we made our water filters. When we made them dirty water was poured in the filter, and we used a grading strip to tell us what number and how dirty it was.

Pitch Maths

As for maths we worked really well using our collaborative skills on achieving to getting our work done. It was a lot of work but as we negotiate our thinking to one an another we finished the task. My group was Giovanni, Matthew and I. I think that we should try and work on our word problem.

Advertisment

This week for writing we were continuing to complete our advertising DLO's. I was working in a group three with Matthew and Giovanni. At first we decided to make a Movie, but we realised that was to hard so we made a poster. We could either choose to make an advertisement about Rugby World Cup merchandise or a Hoverbike.

RWC Stadium Capacities

This week for Math we made a DLO Answering one of the questions about the RWC Stadium Capacity activities. Jayden and I decided to use the 1st question, but before we made the DLO we had to answer seven Questions. Some of the questions were hard to solve but we Managed to do it. This math activity was challenging which made it fun.

Let me tell you about my favourite celebration

‘Let me tell you about…’ my favourite cultural celebration called Christmas I always wake up jump around the tree, and try to peek when no one is looking. Then I make noise with the pots and pans to make sure everyone wakes up so we can open our presents. Once everyone in my house is awake we open our presents and have breakfast, and every Christmas morning we have bacon and spaghetti with toast. Christmas this year and every other year is the 25 of December, 2019 and so on. On Christmas we do one embarrassing moment in the afternoon my brothers and I dress up in Christmas costumes and doing dances on the sidewalk. Even though I love Christmas I love spending time with my friends and family more. My friends and I either go to the beach or the pool we all get to choose one parent to come and supervise, and we go to the beach when it’s sunny and the pools when it’s cloudy and it’s about to rain. And this is why Christmas my favourite celebration.

Commas what are they? Are they useful? Yes we use this punctuation, for many reasons like separating dialogue, The day and year, the introduction of people and characters, separate suburbs and cites, items on a list and before FANBOYS.

International News article

This week for Reading we were doing the same as last weeks activity (National news articles), but this week we were doing international news articles. Karlos and I were working as partners to find the different types of national articles. Those types of articles we were to find were Timeliness, Relevance, Magnitude, Unexpectedness, Impact, Reference to someone important or famous, Oddity, Conflict, Reference to something negative, Continuity, Emotions and Progress. The most weird news article we found was the cloning company in china which they cloned a cat. The most harmful article we found was the Dorian Hurricane which hit the Bahamas. We enjoyed the activity and had fun.

Exploring our National current events

News editors make decisions everyday about which current events stories they will run.
We explored the different types of current events that are happening in NZ, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. An example would be the Christchurch mosque attack is Impact, Emotions and Magnitude.

Explanation: Should NZ ban plastic straws?

Should NZ ban plastic straws?

My opinion is that we should ban plastic straws because who would want to eat a fish with plastic. And it is dangerous to the environment and the marine Animals. Plastic takes over 500 years to decompose.

First Plastic can remain in the environment for over 2,000 years because most plastic is not biodegradable. NZ we need to not Litter especially our Plastic straws it's disgusting this action needs to stop. I recently found a video of some people on a boat find this turtle with something in its nose they thought it was a tube worm at first, but as they pulled it out it turned out to be a straw. Would you like it if you had a straw in your nose? About 0.025% of plastic are found in our ocean imagine how much of that is in a marine animals digestive system.

My second reason on why we should ban these plastic straws is because they have harmful toxins while they decompose. By 2050 there will be more plastic straws than sea life in our waterways. First people will buy a drink and sometimes ask for a straw to drink with, and when they finish they will throw their rubbish either on the floor or in the bin as known. Next straws will most likely end up in the ocean and a turtle or any other marine animal can die by the straws. About 65,000 amounts of straws were found in the last 10 years.

My third reason, fish and other marine creatures suffer from the dangers of the plastic do we really want them to suffer. Plastic straws are just one of the most dangerous pieces of plastic in our waterways. Nobody wants to go for a swim in the river and the beaches polluted with plastic. And the plastic straws poke your eyes while you swim.

to make a change just asking for no straw to take with you while you have your beverage that you buy can keep some marine animals alive. and that's why we should not use plastic straws and ban them.

Respect-Aretha Franklin

This DLO is about the song respect by Aretha Franklin. Aretha Franklin was a singer who was famous for being one of the most active female singers. Her most famous song is called Respect and is a song that tells an important message. Sadly she died the 16th of August 2018. She was a great singer and is one of my favourite female singers.

Respect: admiring someone or something by their skills and abilities.

Plastic Straws Opinion

This week for writing LS2 have been creating a DLO that explains two side of an argument if we should ban plastic straws or not and our opinions. I decided to say for my opinion on my reason on why we should ban them. after we did that we had to write a speech for our reasons and our opinion.

Tech (Graphics) Last session

This week for Tech we had our last session of graphics. I've really enjoyed the sessions that we've had doing graphics with Mrs Ferguson. Everyone is almost there games but we have to wait for our pieces for our games. I've finished painting my tic tac toe board and im just waiting to get my pieces done. My favourite part of graphics was being able to create 3D designs on my Chromebook. We had a Challenge and the challenge was to create a Halloween character or an alien using tinkercad or thingiverse.com. Im really excited to do what we are doing next week.

Persuasive Speeches

L.I To write a speech that persuades others to think the way you do.

Title: Why we should pick up other peoples rubbish.

Speech: Hi My name is Karlos and I think it is important we pick up our rubbish to take care of our earth? It is important to understand what rubbish can do to the environment and the effect it has on animals. What if you threw your rubbish onto the ground and an animal eats it and becomes sick or even dies, how would this make you feel?

First if rubbish gets thrown on the ground that’s called littering. And if that rubbish gets into the different waterways in our local area or our environment, imagine the damage it could do. 55% of kids don’t understand what littering does. If we litter our plastic bags the wind picks it up and it goes into the waterways, Turtles and other sea life can mistake our rubbish as Jellyfish which causes them to be strangled by the plastic.

Did you know that 1.4 Billion people litter their rubbish every year. Are you one of these people? If you look across the road you can see the tamaki river. We want to keep our river clean. If we don’t take care of the pollution all the sea animals in that river and other waterways may die. Some animals can help the waterways and keep it clean.

We can help get rid of this problem by picking up rubbish even if it isn’t yours to save animals and the environment. Another way of stopping this problem is by instead of using plastic bags use your reusable bag.

When we finished our speeches we had to present to either the whole class or in a small group. I did a Good Job doing my speech because after I finished it I was able to check it  over and over to fix the mistakes I made. I think I could do better in the future when I do a speech is write a bit more paragraphs and add more detail to the paragraphs.

HIIT

This week we had our last session of HIIT with Mr Ogilvie. We were doing our arm strengths. There were three circuits the first one was to do mountain climbers on the floor or on the stage, pull ups and push ups for thirty seconds. Giovanni was my partner and we took turns to do each circuit we did this three times for every circuit Giovanni and I started with the mountain climbers, then the pull up and after that we did the push ups. My Favorite one out of the three wa doing the pull ups. Then we had to get into a circle and we had to follow the pattern of the song which was called Bring Sally up and we did squats well following the pattern and we had to try and make people finish the song with out stopping.

Motat trip

Yesterday LS2, LS1 and RM 5 went to Motat in Auckland to learn about our inquiry topic STEAM Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. LS2 were with RM 5 to help make sure they were together LS2 were first making a car using cardboard, batteries, battery pack, skewers motor, fans and straws. We did this in partners my partner was Matthew. Our car was to heavy so the fan wasn't strong enough to push the car forward. After that we went to build a flashlight we had to work in a group of three it was Matthew, Giovanni and I we had to build something to make it not flicker we had to make it efficient and it was hard because there were no tips to help and not enough time. After that we had our lunch then went to have a look around parts of Motat that also help us learn more about our our inquiry topic. The teachers were Emma, Kensar and Damon. It was a good trip because everyone was having fun with the activities They were hard but fun at the same time.

Graphics

This week for Tech we were learning how to make something with using different shapes. We made a moon shape with using three cylinders we first dragged the cylinder to were it turned into a oval, then we copied and pasted it put the two ovals next to each other and the were two options a solid and a hole option. The solid option is to change the colour and the hole option was to make the shape turn transparent it only worked if we group the shapes. After making a few things on Tinkercad Mrs Ferguson showed us her drawing of trying to make Mr Anderson. We had to try to make her but it was a bit challenging to do because I couldn't find the right shapes.

Word problem-Maths game

This week we got to make our on maths game for the past two weeks and we had  to present it to the whole class today. We had to go and present with a partner so they could also present theirs. I decided to make word problems for people who don't understand can learn and hopefully get better at solving word problems. It was hard making this game because thinking of what to write and getting all of the links correct. I enjoyed this activity because I could do something that I haven't done in a while.

Wednesday 3 July 2019

Matariki

This week for reading Nevaeh and I were doing a Matariki task but before we did that we had to write our ideas on a piece of paper in 3 minutes and after that we had to also write some more ideas that we could remember within 10 minutes. On our DLO we had two write what we learnt in watching the video. Matariki is celebrated by Maori's every year to celebrate the 7 stars coming to NZ

Rhythm Interactive's visit to PBS

This week the whole of PBS went to the hall to learn about the importance of making a change with our special guest Johnny. When we got into the hall we up to buddy up with one of students in Rm 1 and 6 to help them so they can understand what to do because they are the little kids in the school. Our instructor Johnny talked to us about making a change together as a team. Johnny had a phrase called if you can say it you can play it it means to speak something and copy but on a drum. We had to listen and follow a beat, Pattern or a Rhythm. Johnny had a African drum called a Djembe and we had a little version of the Djembe. I really Enjoyed this activity because I got to help the younger students and to copy a beat on a drum, And it was also funny. johnny has a video about saving the Jungle. At the end Johnny was giving out drums for the school if they get the answer right to see if we can guess what the instrument.

Respect the sea life of the ocean

Respect The sea life of the ocean

There a fish everywhere in the oceans of the world, and The fish are disappearing because people aren’t being respectful and either taking undersized or oversized fish. You are only supposed to take what you can eat. Your supposed to take the right size fish because if you take the over sized fish they might be having babies, and if you take the undersized fish the won’t get a chance to grow and have babies to keep the fish living for people to catch the right size. Fisherman use the birds to help find where the fish are.

When you go fishing your supposed to where a life jacket so you can stay afloat if your boat crashes. Did you know that fish are becoming endangered and might become extinct in the future. While going fishing sea birds come to your boat to eat your bait. You can not throw things except for a bucket of water to scare them away so they don’t get injured. After you catch a fish you have to grab it with a wet towel so you don’t remove their scales and their special coating for fish that acts like sunscreen. Plastic is a bad thing for fish because they will get confused and think it is prey.

The earth is a great place and we have to take care of it to keep the animals alive like the sea animals. Also make sure to measure the fish to see if you are allowed to keep it, and don’t injure the sea birds and fish by not respecting them like grabbing the fish without a wet towel. Tell people who go fishing to wear a life jacket to protect your life from drowning.

Waltzing Matilda poem

Today this week we unpacked the literary devices and language in banjo Paterson's very famous poem called Waltzing Matilda. Some of these words mean something but said in a different way than others say it, for example Swag man is a seasonal worker, Jumbuck is a sheep. The poem is telling us how hard it was years ago in Australia. The Swag man would rather jump into the water hole then spend his life in prison.

Strengthening connections to maths language

Today for Maths Nidhi and I learnt that many words can mean the same thing when you are using maths language. We thought about all the different ways of saying hello and how that could be confusing for someone who was learning to speak English. Then Mrs Anderson asked us 'What is a plane?' We all thought that she was asking us about the aircraft plane but we learnt there are two meanings for the word plane. The plane she was asking about is the plane surface that is used in Math. We used the vocabulary DLO to see some other words that were used in Math which we didn't know. We used the explore tool to see what the words meant and dragged them to where they belong. Mrs Anderson's friend shared this activity with us because we need to know what the words mean in a maths context to help us understand what the question is asking us to do.

Tech

Image result for 3d cube

This week at tech we had our second session doing graphics with Mrs Fergurson. We started off with labelling the parts of the toys, writing what the toys made from and how to play the game. And after that we were handed a piece of paper and we had to draw a 3D cube so we can shade the top light and the front of it medium and the left or right depending on which hand you write with you make it as dark a you can.

Literary Devices

This week we were challenged to only use google docs to make our Literary devices DLO. First we worked in partners  on separate DLO to do a different DLO about were we had to try and guess if the sentences were Hyperbole, Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personification or Onomatopoeia. When we finished that we made our own sentences about Hyperbole, Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personification or Onomatopoeia. Then on another google doc we made a table and write those six words find images and write down the definition.

Gymnastics

This week on Thursday we had our fourth lesson with our coach Steve. We had some new things we had to try like on the bars we had to try and swing back and forth like on a swing. The things I found challenging were the handstand on the wall I found it challenging because I couldn't bring the bar closer to the wall. Another thing I found challenging was the beam and walking backwards because I am not really good at walking backwards. My group Alex, Aung Naing, Jack, Rhys, Chavda and Avalon.) The circuit I was in was we were doing handstands on the wall and bringing the bar closer to the wall and swinging on the steps back and forth. We were learning a new skill called the dive roll.

Who am I

Today I made A google drawing about who I am and what are the things I like. On my google drawing I used transparent images to make the google drawing about what I like.Transparent is when there is no background to an image so you can put images without other images are not covered.

Major Yuri Gagarin Animation

This week for reading we used our creative skills to create an animation or an explainer movie about Yuri Gagarin, in groups. My group and I decided to create an animation. Before we created the animation, we planned it as a group. On a piece of paper we drew a S to include the information we wanted about Yuri Gagarin from the start to the finish. A fact about Yuri Gagarin is that he was the first cosmonaut to orbit Earth in Vostok 1. After planning the animation, we started to create our animation. We chose a leader to tell us our job of creating our animation. We all decided that Chavda was the right leader of our group. My group and I worked together as a team and helped each other to complete our animation. I think that everyone in my group had great create skills and are really talented in drawing digitally.

Stardome Trip

Yesterday on Thursday evening LS2 went on a trip to Stardome in One Tree Hill. When we got to Stardome we walked in and went into this room where you can sit on a seat and take you on a tour about space. The guy who was controlling this tour talked to us about the constellations, and my favorite constellation is Sagittarius the Archer he is a half man half horse.

When we finished that we went out and has ten minutes to have a look around and see what else they had in the Stardome. There was a angry birds game and you play on planets and there is this thing that you can pick a planet and stand on a metal thing that sees ho much you weigh and it compares it to see how much you will weigh on the planet you picked. When we left the Stardome it was dark and when we got back to school some peoples parents were waiting outside.

It was fun at the Star I learn't so many things.

Penguins

Penguins

Penguins are unusual animals the Male penguins look after the eggs until they hatch while the Female penguins go, and hunt for food. Penguins are flightless birds which means they can’t fly. Penguins have created technique on how to move from place to place faster it is called tobogganing its when the penguins slide around on their stomachs like a sled on the ice.  Penguins use a special oil to keep them warm and keep their feathers clean.

Penguins come in all different colours and sizes the tallest penguin is the Aptenodytes forsteri, and its height is 122m and the smallest penguin is the little penguin and its height is 33cm. The main colours of a penguin is a black back and a white stomach.  The female penguins do everything : eating, swimming, hunting and nesting.

Penguins are carnivores (they eat meat). Penguins main meal is fish but they also eat Krill, Squid and other small sea animals. Penguins will eat food at any time of the day or night.

Penguins live in different kind of countries They mostly live in the southern hemisphere. Some of the countries they live in are New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, south america, Falkland Islands, Galapagos Islands, Gough Island and South sandwich island.

Also did you know that Penguins get out of the water by rocketing out The penguins can be found in a lot of different places in the world.

This week for writing I made a information report about penguins. First we had to make a copy of a google document for note taking before we did the writing about the penguins to help us write our information report. The structure of a information report is TIPS Tittle, introduction, paragraphs and summary. In a information report there has to have technical words and must be in present tense. In my information report about penguins was to talk about the appearance (what they look like), diet (what they eat and the habbitat (where they live) of the penguins. I have learnt that penguins are extraordinary creatures.

Gymnastics

L.I To learn multiple tasks. This week LS2 had our second session with Steve from Eastern Suberbs Gymnastics. We were doing Foward rolls, Backwards rolls, Cartwheels, Beam-Balance, Jumping and building strength. We had a warm up game it was like stuck in the mud its when there are two taggers and Steve would tell us a way to try not to get tagged like hop on one leg and skipping. If you get tagged you would have to put one knee on the ground with one arm up and someone would have to pretend to sit on you like a toilet and they pull your arm down. After that we did our stretches. We were in rotation groups so we don't all go to the same activities and people don't get hurt. Examples of each circuit were circuit 1: handstand on the wall and have one leg out, circuit 2: Foward roll on a beam, and circuit 3: run and jump on a trampoline and make a star shape with your body.

WW1 Transportation ship

This week My group and I made a DLO about the WW1 transports ships but some people call them troop ships. The purpose of this DLO was to make sure everyone in the group had a turn to talk about the information and saying it in their own words, but the main thing this group DLO was about was collaborating together as a team to succeed. My group and I wrote about how many soldiers were in the transport boat, What boat did the soldiers use for transportation and how long does it take to get from NZ to Egypt. On the sides we just wrote down some information.

Continents around the world
